Deir Mar Maroun (St. Maroun Monastery)

Two kilometers (1.2 miles) north of Qamou' al-Hermel towards town, look for the Ain Zarqa Spring, the most vital source of Al-Aassi River. That’s where you’ll find Deir Mar Maroun: a group of grottoes carved in the rocks at three levels. It dates back to the 6th and 7th centuries and was a temporary reprieve for the followers of St. Maroun, the founder of the Maronite Sect. Arabs would later fortify these grottoes.
