National Unity Square

If you walk along the eastern side of the Grand Serail you will come across one of Beirut’s most arresting monuments: National Unity Square.

Completed in 2009, the square is a tribute to late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri—a statue of him, designed by Russian sculptor Maguerditch Mazmanian, figures prominently in the middle of a triangular complex of terraced basalt stone reflecting pools that mirror the grandiose seat of government in the background as well as a row of Jacaranda trees. The site was designed by Vladimir Djurovic.
