St. Elias Greek Orthodox Cathedral

Neighboring Nejmeh Square, Saint Elias Cathedral is noted for the harmony of its Byzantine architecture and its beautiful Oriental decorations and boasts a magnificent marble iconostasis.

In 1934, the cathedral was threatened with demolition to allow for a boulevard connecting the Arch of Triumph to Martyr’s Square. Damaged, as were most churches during the Civil War, its restoration was completed in 2006.
